Synopsis

In a village in the interior of the Brazilian "sertao' the police destroy every living being guilty of having given hospitality to the band of the cangaceiro Firminio. Only Espedito is saved from the massacre: he is a young cowboy. He is wounded and is saved by a holy hermit, Julao, who entrusts him with a mission to be carried out among the population of the "sertao'. From that moment on, the young man is called the Redeemer. However, the meeting with Diavolo Nero, a powerful cangaceiro, convinces him that the struggle for justice and freedom for the oppressed people must be an armed struggle. Espedito, having become more cunning, frees about fifteen men from prison and creates the nucleus of his band, with which he soon becomes known as the feared Redeemer, king of the Cancago, avenger of the oppressed and castigator of the rich landowners and of the police. By way of a Dutchman, Helfen, who is interested in a huge oil-field, Espedito stipulates a pact of no fighting with the Government but the banquet offered by the Governor puts the seal on their treachery and deceit. In fact the government has managed to settle the Redeemer in the region of the Aqua Branca, putting him against all the other cangaceiros and in giving him an old fazenda which the cangaceiro himself had wanted to make a sort of paradise on earth, open to all the humble, the poor and the disinherited of the area. While Espedito is busy destroying the rival bands, the Dutch man begins to exploit the oil-field. Helfen, having understood the governments deception, helps Espedito and saves his life. The leave-taking between the two is moving and sincere, but it is only to be temporary..
