Hallejuja and Sartana strike again (Alleluja e Sartana figli di... Dio)

In the spaghetti western universe it wasn't uncommon to recycle characters who had done well at the box-office. Sartana was a special favorite in that aspect. In this movie he appears alongside Halleluja, an Italian western hero of minor stature. Both are, by the way, far removed from the original gunmen of the same name.

Halleluja and Sartana are two horse thieves who become friends. They arrive in a town where a church is about to be built. The townspeople think Haleluja is the priest they are waiting for (no wonder with such a name!). Initially the two men plan to make a good thing out of the mistaken identity, but eventually they decide to protect the townspeople against the villain who's after the riches hidden in the ground under their town ...

If you didn't get it yet: this is a comedy western. A comedy western Italian style, that is. We get, in other words, an endless series of jokes, but only a couple of them are genuinely funny. And then there's also an infinite number of fistfights, executed in rather infantile, but otherwise good-looking fashion.

You must be in the mood to survive this nonsense. I was in a good mood when watching it - for the second time. I liked it better this time than the fist time around. Ron Ely and Alberto Dell'Acqua aren't bad at all as the couple of friends and Ezio Marano is quite funny as the überstupid villain called Wolf, who (what's in a name!) starts crying on a couple of occasions.

It's a feelgood movie, so nobody gets shot. On the other hand there is a incredibly ugly looking woman who urges her husband to commit suicide with her ugliness. Ha ha ha. In other words: it's all family friendly fun what's served here by Mario Siciliano.

In the same year, Sicialiano also made Trinity & Sartana, again with an acrobatic dell'Acqua as Sartana, and again a so-called 'Clash of the Icons of the Italian west'. Compared to that movie, Halleluja & Sartana can almost be called a masterpiece.
