He fled the country and appeared in international co-productions among which were three Euro-westerns: A Canyon Full of Gold (1971) Escape from Gold Country (TV) (1977) and Cesta na jihozápad (1989). French actor Pierre Brice, known to all western fans as Winnetou, died in a Paris hospital today June 6th of pneumonia. He was 86 years old. Brice was born Pierre Louis Baron de Bris on February 6, 1929 in Brest, Brittany, France, became famous in Germany as "Winnetou".  The novel hero of Karl May was the role of his life. In the 1960s he played him a total of eleven times.  His first appearance was born in1962’s "Treasure of Silver Lake".  Ten million people saw the film in Germany alone. The film series ended in 1968. In his native France Brice was hardly known.  The connection to Germany was tight, not only because of its many fans, his wife Hella comes from Bavaria.

Born Giacomo Matteo Furia in Rome on January 2, 1925 he got to know director Eduardo De Filippo during a summer job which led to his becoming an actor on stage, film, TV and radio. Furia was also a voice dubber and appeared in four Euro-westerns: The Dream of Zorro (1951) as Panchito, Vengeance Ranch (1965),  And God Said to Cain (1969) as Juanito and Where the Bullets Fly (1972) as Gennarino.

Many have passed away, and while we are young growing up re-watching all these classics, many more will probably leave us. May they be remembered. Jacques Sernas, the Lithuanian born French actor, died in Rome today July 3rd, a few weeks short of his 90th birthday. Born Jurgis Bernard Šernas on July 30, 1925 Sernas escaped with his family to France after his father had taken part in the 1918 Lithuanian Act of Independence. He became an actor after WWII and appeared in over 100 films and TV appearances from 1947 – 2006. He appeared in La Dolce Vita in 1960. His only Euro-western appearances was as Major Saunders along with Giuliana Gemma in 1966’s Fort Yuma Gold.

Italian director and screenwriter Sergio Sollima has died in Rome at age of 94, Sollima is known and loved by all fans of Western movies and those who remember the great success of his Sandokan TV series with Kabir Bedi in the 1970s. Often referred to as the other Sergio, he directed and wrote the screenplays for “The Big Gundown” (1966), “Face to Face” and “Run, Man, Run” (both 1967).


  • CHUDIK, Ladislav - 5/27/1924, Hronec, Czechoslovakia - 6/29/2015, Bratislava, Slovakia

Czechoslovakian actor and longtime member of the Slovak National Theatre (SND) Ladislav Chudík died on June 29th at the age 91 years. He was born May 27, 1924 in the municipality Hronec, Czechoslovakia. Chudik worked for The Slovak government under President Milan Čiča from 12 December 1989 to 28 February 1990 as Minister of Culture. In 1999 he received an award for lifetime achievement. Ladislav appeared in the 1977 Czech TV western ‘Escape from Gold Country’ as Dowseta.

German television director Dietrich Haugk died on June 28th. Haugk who directed many German television thrillers and written teleplays, was 90 years of age. He directed the first and the last “Derrick”: The director Dietrich Haugk, the other German TV thrillers as “The Old Man” or the “metropolitan area” is staged, died on Sunday. Dietrich directed the TV Euro-western; ‘Destry reitet wieder’ which was televised in 1966.

Italian sex symbol, Laura Antonelli died of an apparent heart attack, over the weekend at her home in Ladispoli, Italy, a suburb of Rome. She was 73. Laura’s body was discovered this morning by her caretaker. Born Laura Antonaz on November 28, 1941 in Pola, Istria, Italy. She had appeared in commercials and had several uncredited roles before her breakthrough role in Malizia (1973). She went on to appear in a number of erotic and art films. Her only Euro-western film was a Ria, James Garner’s woman in A Man Called Sledge (1971).

French actor and voice dubber Guy Piérauld died in France on June 16th at the age of 89. Born Guy Louis di Piro on October 5, 1924 in Lyon, Rhône, France, for forty years he was the voice of Bugs Bunny and also Woody Woodpecker and Kiri the Clown. Besides his dubbing he also was a stage actor and film and television actor. Guy was the French voice of Billy the Kid in the 1984 Lucky Luke TV series. He was a voice of an unknown actor in God Forgives… I Don’t (1966) and appeared in the 1971 Euro-western television series Aubrac City.

Spanish voice actor Claudi Garcia died in Barcelona on June 16, 2015 he was 79 years-old. Garcia was married to voice actress Nuria Domènech. Claudi has 34 pages of films that he dubbed on the Spanish Actors Dubbing database and 15 pages on the Catalan Spanish voice actors site. One of the major Spanish voice actors of all time. He was the Spanish voice of Lee Van Cleef in El Condor, Klaus Kinski in His Name was King LQ Jones in The Hunting Party and Geoffrey Lewis in Renegade (aka Blueberry). I have almost three dozen credits for his dubbing in my database.

British actor Sir Christopher Lee died in Chelsea, London, England on Sunday June 7th, he was 93. Who doesn't know Christopher Lee, he was active since the late 1940s and continued until his passing. Lee was best known for his role as Dracula in the 1960s Hammer films but younger audiences know him from Lord of the Rings series. He played Bailey in 1971's Hannie Caulder, his only Euro-western.
