The excellent visual compositions created by Peter Collinson and his cinematographer, John Cabrera have always been undermined by poor quality, full screen transfers. Finally however, thanks to Odeon Entertainment, the film now has the quality release it deserves. The remastered widescreen image is clean, sharp and in its correct 1.78:1 aspect ratio while the colour saturation is good and the overall image quality is bright and warm. There are a few 'night' scenes shot with blue filter which are a little too dark but this is not a major issue and is really only a minor criticism. More troubling is the muffled sound on the remastered mono audio which particularly effects the dialogue. The voices are difficult to decipher at times and this is particularly an issue as, in a mystery story such as this, its easy to get confused if you don't catch every word. I suspect this issue is due to the quality of the source track but, although a little disappointing, the problem was not sufficient to ruin my viewing pleasure. The music and sound effects are seemingly unaffected and I simply turned the volume up a bit to overcome any difficulties I initially had with the dialogue. Either way, the minor sound issues are more than outweighed by the quality of the image and the release as a whole gets a hearty thumbs up from me. A failed assassination attempt leaves its intended victim (Richard Crenna) wounded and suffering from amnesia. He teams up with a wandering outlaw (Stephen Boyd) and tries to piece together his real identity and why he is so hated and feared. He comes to believe he is a gunslinger known as Rubel Noon, but why is a gang of killers on his trail and what do they ultimately want from him?

Euan Lloyd was a British producer who made a career out of making action adventure films with all star casts for an international audience. His successes include such films as '''The Sea Wolves''' and '''The Wild Geese''' but between 1968 and 1973 he made three westerns in Spain, all based on stories written by legendary western author Louis L'Amour. The first was [[Shalako]], starring Sean Connery. The last, and I believe the best, was [[Hombre llamado Noon, Un|The Man Called Noon]]. In many ways it is atypical for a Eurowestern. It's style, characters and storyline, probably due in large part to the L'Amour source, are more American than European. Both lead actors are, of course, also American, but even the music score from the great Luis Bacalov sounds more akin to something you might expect in a U.S production. But British made westerns always tended toward the classic rather than Mediterranean style so it is no great surprise that The Man Called Noon should follow that trend. It is, however, also a very British film despite its Spanish Italian co production status and the Brits involved in the key creative roles in the film deliver some of their finest work.

Director Peter Collinson is best remembered these days for being at the helm of Brit Cult classic '''The Italian Job''' but his work on The Man Called Noon, is in my opinion, some of his finest and most memorable. In a film which is at its heart a mystery story set in the west, Collinson manages to make excellent use of some of the visual iconography of the genre while also creating some truly atmospheric framing which match the subject matter perfectly and maintain a continual sense of tension. Everything here seems a little eerie and off kilter; a visual environment which helps keep the viewer compelled and guessing throughout. And like most mysteries the initial pacing of the film is somewhat slow to begin with as the characters and story is established. But once the lead starts to fly the pace picks up considerably and the work of co producer Bob Simmons comes to the fore. Simmons was stunt co ordinator and action supervisor on a plethora of British productions over the years including a host of Bond films from Dr No to A View to a Kill and his experience is well used here as the body count rises and the stunts pile up leading to an exciting and well constructed showdown finale.

The film also benefits from an excellent cast. Crenna is particularly strong in the eponymous role while Stephen Boyd puts in a solid shift as the ambiguous side kick. The Man Called Noon is a film which has never had a home video release, either on VHS or DVD which has done it justice. The excellent visual compositions created by Peter Collinson and his cinematographer, John Cabrera have always been undermined by poor quality, full screen transfers. Finally however, thanks to Odeon Entertainment, the film now has the quality release it deserves. The remastered widescreen image is clean, sharp and in its correct 1.78:1 aspect ratio while the colour saturation is good and the overall image quality is bright and warm. There are a few 'night' scenes shot with blue filter which are a little too dark but this is not a major issue and is really only a minor criticism. More troubling is the muffled sound on the remastered mono audio which particularly effects the dialogue. The voices are difficult to decipher at times and this is particularly an issue as, in a mystery story such as this, its easy to get confused if you don't catch every word. I suspect this issue is due to the quality of the source track but, although a little disappointing, the problem was not sufficient to ruin my viewing pleasure. The music and sound effects are seemingly unaffected and I simply turned the volume up a bit to overcome any difficulties I initially had with the dialogue. Either way, the minor sound issues are more than outweighed by the quality of the image and the release as a whole gets a hearty thumbs up from me. In short, if you are looking for the best available DVD release of this excellent British western, this is the one to get.

Deve il suo nome dal fatto che la maggior parte di lore furono diritti e prodotti dagli Italiani, spesso in collaborazione con altri paesi europei, sopratutto Spagna e Germania. Inizialmente il denominazione ‘spaghetti western’ era un termine sprezzante, dato da critici stranieri al genere, perché pensavano che i film fossero inferiori ai western americani. La maggior parte dei film furono reallizati con un budget limitato, ma qualche fra loro era innovativo e artistico, anche se al momento non hanno ricevuto molto riconoscimento, néanche in Europa. ==Che cosa lo rende speciale?==

Si crede che il genere è sorto in seguito al grande successo di ''[[Per un pugno di dollari]]'' (1964) di Sergio Leone, un addattamento in chiave western di un film giapponese, '''''Yojimbo''''' (Akira Korusawa, 1961). Ma un ‘pugno di western’ sono stati girati in Italia prima che Leone redefinisse il genere, e poi gli italiani non erano i primi a fare western in Europa negli anni sessanta. In Germania alcuni western basati sulle opere di Karl May erano stati prodotti, e il primo western europeo che aveva almeno alcuni ingredienti giusti per essere definito come uno ‘spaghetti western’, è stata fatta senza input italiano, essendo un co-produzione brittanico-spagnolo, ''[[Tierra brutal|The Savage Guns]]'' (Michael Carreras, 1962)
Ma sicuramente era Sergio Leone che ha definito l'aspetto e l'atteggiamento del genere western con la famosa Trilogia del Dollaro: ''Per un pugno di dollari'', ''[[Per qualche dollaro in più]]'' (1965) e ''[[Buono, il brutto, il cattivo, Il| Il Buono, Il Brutto, Il Cativo]]'' (1966). Il Far West di Leone era caraterizzato di villagi bianchi e polverosi, venti urlandi, cani magri e eroi cinici, che spesso avevano l’aspetto di un bandito.

La colonna sonora di tutti e tre i film è stata composta da Ennio Morricone, e la sua musica era così insolita come lo stile di Leone: non solo faceva uso di strumenti come la tromba, l’arpa o la chitarra elettrica, ha anche aggiunto fischio, schiocchi di frustra e colpi di pistole. Morricone ha composto la colonna sonora di più di 30 western italiano, e la sua musica è stato un fattore chiave per il successo del genere.
Generalmente i spaghetti western sono più orientati all’azione che le loro contreparte americane. Il dialogo è sparso e alcuni critici hanno rilevato che i film sono costruiti come opere liriche, utillizzando la musica come ingrediente illustrativo della narrazione. Da molto tempo il western era stato chiamato in inglese ‘a horse opera’ (un opera lirica con cavalli), ma come il professore di studi culturali Christopher Frayling ha sottolineato, ci sono voluti gli italiani per illustrare la vera significazione del termine. Negli anni sessanti i spaghetti western furono considerati come abbastanza violenti, e alcuni sono stati tagliati - o persino vietati - in alcuni mercati.

Molti spaghetti western si svolgono alla frontiera americano-messicano e spesso i banditi sono rumorosi e spietati Messicani. La Guerra civile e il postbellico è anche un sfondo ricorrente. Gli eroi spesso hanno nomi bizarri come Ringo, Sartana, Sabata, Johnny Oro, Arizona Colt o Django. Senza dubbio, il genere è un genere cattolica (alcuni altri nomi in uso sono Aleluja, Trinità o Aquasanta Joe), con uno stile influenzato dalla iconografia cattolica, per esempio, ''la crocifissione'', ''l’ultima cena'' o ''l’ecce homo''. L’extravaganza surreale ''[[Se sei vivo spara]]'', di Giulio Questi, offre una protagonista che resuscita dal mondo dei morti, e poi è testimone del Giordo del Giudizio in un paese nel Far West.

Gli esterni di molti spaghetti western, soprattutto quelli con un budget relativamente elevato, furono girati in Spagna, in particolare nel deserto di Tabernas (vicino ad Almeria, Andalusia) e a Colmenar Viejo e Hoyo de Manzanares (vicino a Madrid). In Italia la maggior parte dei locazioni preferiti si trovano nei dintorni di Roma. Alcuni spaghetti western furono girati nelle Alpi, Nord Africa o Israele. Di solito gli interni furono girati ai grandi studi romani come Cinecittà, Elios, De laurentiis o De Paolis. Alcuni studi avevano un ‘western town’; Elios aveva anche un paese messicano.

==Una breve storia del genere==

Il western è sempre stato popolare in Italia. Qualche western italiano sono stati prodotti durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale, quando il governo fascista esclusi i western americani dal cinema italiano, per esempio ''[[Fanciullo del West, Il|Il Fanciullo del West]]'' (1942), di Giorgio Ferroni (che avrebbe diretto vari spaghetti western con Giuliano Gemma ). Negli anni sessanta l’assenza del western Americano nei cinema italiani ha un altro motive: alcuni dei più important registi del genere, come John Ford e Anthony Mann sono alla fine delle sue carrier, e gli americani hanno trasferito il genere alla televisione. Inoltre i film dopo i libri di Karl May hanno creato un contesto culturale e finanziario che permette una produzione su vasta scala di western in Europa.

I primi western all’italiana degli anni sessanta assomigliano, più o meno, ai western americano serie B, con attori e registi che adoptano pseudonimi americannizzati. Leone realizza il suo primo western ''Per un pugni di dollari'' contemporaneamente a ''[[Pistole non discutono, Le|Le pistole non discutono]]'' di Mario Caiano. Mentre Leone redefinisce il genere del western (e definisce lo spaghetti western), Caiano racconta una storia familiare di un sceriffo chiamato Pat Garrett, e là dove Caiano impegna un attore Americano alla fine della sua carriere (Rod Cameron), Leone scegle un giovane attore telivisivo chiamato '''[[Clint Eastwood]]'''. Con il genere ancora nella sua infanzia, la maggior parte dei western prodotti nel anno di transizione 1965 offrono una combinazione di elementi americani e italiani, come per esempio i due film di Duccio Tessari sul personaggio di Ringo: ''[[Pistola per Ringo, Una|Una pistola per Ringo]]'' e ''[[Ritorno di Ringo, Il|Il ritorno di Ringo]]'', con Giuliano Gemma, il primo superstar italiano del genere. Leone aveva ancora firmato la versione internazionale di un pugno di dollari con il pseudonimo americanizzato di bob Robertson. Il primo italiano a firmare un spaghetti western con il proprio nome sara Sergio Corbucci per ''[[Minnesota Clay]]'' (1965).

In questo, piuttosto breve periodo la maggior parte dei grandi western all’italiana sono stati prodotti. Nel 1966 Leone Leone gira ''Il buono, il Brutto e il Cattivo'', la quitessenza della produzione di western all’italiana, e considerate da molti come il migliore western mai reallizzato. Un’ altra pietra miliare è ''[[Django]]'' di Sergio Corbucci (l’altro Sergio), il prototype del western che tratta la vendetta del protagonista; il film genera numerosi imitazioni con ‘Django’ nel titolo. Nel 1968 i stessi due registi producono due capolavori indiscustibili: Leone reallizza il legendario ''[[C'era una volta il West|C'era una Volta il West]]'', il primo spaghetti western di attirare l’attenzione dei cosidetti critici ‘seri’, e Corbucci fa ''[[Grande silenzio, Il|Il Grande Silenzio]]'', un western ambietato nella neve (girato a Cortina d’Ampezzo!), che rovescia quasi tutte le convenzioni del genere, tra i quali il luogo commune che in un western è sempre il buono che vince.

Un altro regista dal periodo d'oro del genere, è Sergio Sollima ('il terzo Sergio'). Impegnato politicamente, è anche il rigista più intellettuale del mucchio. ''[[Resa dei conti, La|La Resa dei Conti]]'' ,con Lee van Cleef, veterano della trilogia del dollaro, è un storia di lotta di classe, così come una decostruzione del mito del pistolero che uccide a norma di legge. ''[[Faccia a faccia]]'' (1967) è la storia di un professore di college di New England, chi viaggia verso il sud e scopre il suo istinto violento quando è tenuto in ostaggio da un bandito. Il professore è interpretato da Gian Maria Volonté, un altro veterano di Leone, mentre il bandito è interpretato dal attore cubano-americano Tomas Milian.

Volonté anche appare in ''[[Quien Sabe|Quién sabe?]]'' (1966) di Damiano Damiani, un film che da il tono per una serie di western sulla rivoluzione messicana, i cosidetti '''''Zapata western'''''. Tomas Milian appare in molti Zapata western, sempre come un semplice ''peon'', un contadino messicano che diviene revoluzionario. Milian dice che il tipo del peon è diventato ‘un simbolo di povertà e di rivoluzione’. Negli anni sessanta il marxismo era molto populare tra gli intelletuali europei, soprattutto nei paesi del Mediterraneo, e i Zapata western sembrano riflettere le idée rivoluzionarie che vivevano tra di loro. Essendo più sofisticato e intellettuale che lo spaghetti western ‘normale’, il sottogenere del Zapata western era molto populare tra gli studenti. Ma era anche molto popolare tra il pubblico del terzo mondo. Due esempi illustri del sottogenere sono ''[[Tepepa]]'', di Gulio Petroni, e ''[[Mercenario, Il|Il Mercenario]]'', di Sergio Leone (entrambi reallizzati nel 1968).

Nel 1969 il numero di western prodotti è in calo, e una tendenza all parodia, già annunciate negli anni prededenti, diviene più evidente, soprattutto nei film sopra il personaggio di Sartana, spesso considerato come la riposta dello spaghetto western al personaggio di James Bond.

Nel 1970 Enzo Barboni - il direttore della fotografia di Corbucci per Django - realizza la commedia ''[[Lo chiamavano Trinità]]''. Il film è un successo mondiale e marca anche l’inizio di un nuovo periodo d’oro, se non per lo spaghetti western, almeno per l’industria cinematografica italiana. Numerosi commedia (o fagioli) western sono stati prodotti, e gli attori Terence Hill (Mario Girotti) e Bud Spencer (Carlo Pedersoli) diventano famosi in tutto il mondo. In generale gli appassionati dello spaghetti western non sono così appassonati dei fagioli western, ma i due film su Trinità e Bambino sono divertenti e il secondo, ''[[Continuavano a chiamarlo Trinità]]'', superò in 1972 gli incassi dei film di Leoni.

Alcuni film offrono una mistura di elementi dello spaghetto western e i film d’azione di Hong kong. Di solito il trama include un specialista di arti marziali cinese che si trova nel Far West. Molto populari all'epoca, nessuno di questi film è diventato un vero classico. Anche se domina la commedia, alcuni western ‘seri’ sono stati prodotti nella primal metà degli anni settanta. ''[[Mio nome è Nessuno, Il|Il mio nome è Nessuno]]'' (regia di Tonino Valerii, supervisione di Leone), è un riflessione serio-comico sulla fine del Far West. Corbucci gira ''[[Vamos a matar, compañeros|Vamos a matar, compañeros!]]'' , una sorta di sequel al suo proprio ''Il Mercenario'', mentre Leone reallizza ''[[Giù la testa]]'', uno politico spaghetti western ‘un po’ differente’.

Il genere ebbe un’ultima ripresa nella seconda méta degli anni settanta, con i cosidetti '''''western crepuscolari''''', una breve seria di western molto eleganti e melancolici, glorificando (e lamentando) sia la fine del genere, che il decadimento dell’industria italiana di film di genere. I film sono stati girati da parte nelle città western – ormai fatiscente – degli studi romani, dove si girarono decine di film western ogni anno nel decennio precedente. Due spaghetti western crepuscolari importanti sono ''[[California]]'', di Michele upo, con Giuliano Gemma, e ''[[Keoma]]'', reallizzato dal prolifico Enzo G. Castellari, con Franco Nero, l’attore che aveva interpretato il ruolo di Django dieci anni prima.

Una nuova generazione di cineasti, rappresentata da artisti come Quentin Tarantino e Robert Rodriguez hanno riscoperto e abbracciato il genere, introdotto elementi narrativi nelle loro sceneggiature, e sviluppato uno stile visivo influenzato dai maestri italiani degli anni sessanta. Allo stesso tempo registi famosi come Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg e, naturalmente, Clint Eastwood hanno confermato la loro grande ammirazione per Sergio Leone, che ormai è riconosciuto universalmente come uno dei più grandi cineasti che sia mai vissuto. Ennio Morricone ha ricevuto un '''Oscar onorario''' nel 2007, per 'il suo contributo magnifico e poliedrico all'arte della colonna sonore'. Clint Eastwood lui a accompagnato alla cerimonia. Due giorni prima, gli due uomini avevano incontrato per la prima volta in 40 anni, ad un ricevimento. L'introduzione del DVD ha sido importante per il genere.
