Description:

Esperienze di cinema italiano raccontate da due protagonisti. Con le testimonianze di Pino Donaggio e Sergio Martino.

The book consists of two long interviews with Italian filmmakers Aldo Lado and Ernesto Gastaldi, who tell to the author of the book about their many years of creative experiences in the Italian film industry and in foreign cinemas. In the interviews, in which the author chronologically traces the development of filmmaking and popular genres for both creators, he questions both Lado and Gastaldi about their collaboration on various Italian westerns. Both Italian filmmakers reveal to the author of the book the background behind the creation of individual films as well as personal experiences that are not usually recorded by film historians. Specifically, in the case of Italian westerns and other popular genres, they talk about the role they played in the Italian cinema of the time and the importance they had for international distribution. The author and the interviewed personalities also deal with the ambivalent relationship common at the time between popular and intellectual film in Italy, whereby both filmmakers reveal that it was popular genres that had a firm meaning for the film industry. Last but not least, Lado and Gastaldi also tell various anecdotes, events, incidents and complications connected with the creation of specific films, including Italian westerns, and point out the position of screenwriters, directors and producers in their production. The reader will also learn a lot of information about their meeting and collaboration with music composers such as Ennio Morricone, Carlo Rustichelli, Stelvio Cipriani or Pino Donaggio. While Lado in the context of the Italian western tells about his function as an assistant director on the films of Maurizio Lucidi, Sergio Bergonezlli or Vincenzo Mussolino, the screenwriter Gastaldi develops memories of working with many iconic directors such as Tonino Valerii, Michele Lupo, Giuliano Carnimeo, Alberto Cardone, Giovanni Fago, Romolo Guerrieri, Mario Siciliano or Sergio Martino. A special space is dedicated to Gastaldi's meeting with Sergio Leone, who engaged him in the role of producer to write scripts for westerns by Tonino Valerii and Damiano Damiani.
