During the Civil War a Confederate soldier (Hilton) becomes a deserter when he wants to be with his fiancée, who’s about to have their baby. When he arrives at her parental home the girl has died and he is told to leave the premises by her Mexican father Don Pedro Sandoval(Borgnine). A cholera epidemic has broken out and when farmers refuse to give milk to the baby, Hilton loses his child as well.
