Vooraf meende ik uiteraard niet een juweeltje in handen te hebben met The Belle Starr Story, maar wél een vermakelijke, exploitatieve prent verhalend over de 'vrouwelijke Jesse James'. Deze redelijke verwachting werd helaas nergens ingelost. Het betreft hier namelijk een enorme schijtfilm die op alle mogelijke manieren zwaar onder de maat is. Mocht het nu zo zijn dat er op wat voor manier dan ook alsnog wat vermaak werd geboden, dan had je mij er niet over horen janken. Dit is echter totaal niet het geval, waardoor er slechts sprake is van een abominable spaghettiwestern waarin praktisch niets gebeurt. Indien je deze film opzet, zul je je er echt doorheen moeten worstelen. Vooral de cinematografie en het acteerwerk doen pijn aan de ogen. Verhaaltechnisch is The Belle Starr Story wellicht nog slechter. In dat licht bezien is het eigenlijk wel een prestatie dat deze actieloze prent van de hak op de tak weet te springen. De hoofdpersoon licht ons middels gesprekken met een outlaw waar ze verliefd op is, in over haar achtergrond. Hiermee komt via flashbacks een zeer afgezaagd beeld aan het licht, namelijk dat van een vrouw die wegens omstandigheden zo 'slecht' geworden is. Het is kort gezegd helemaal niet haar schuld dat ze uitgroeide tot de grootste vrouwelijke schrik van het wilde westen. Nu wil ik voor het gemak wel even aannemen dat Belle Starr dit ook daadwerkelijk was, in welk geval het op zijn minst de wenkbrauwen doet optrekken waarom er nauwelijks aandacht is voor haar criminele gedrag. De makers van de film vonden het interessanter de kijker te vervelen met gezapige romantiek. Dit gebeurt weliswaar niet op de 'Hollywood-manier', doch het is daarom niet minder irritant. Hier komt nog eens bij dat Belle Starr's love interest, net als zijn voorgangers, een zeer irritante kerel is. Het enige bevredigende met betrekking tot dit personage is dat iemand zijn oorbel afrukt, wat ik meteen al hoopte toen ik hem voor het eerst in beeld zag. Deze actie is onderdeel van een scène waarin deze gast op zouteloze wijze wordt gemarteld. Ik veerde bijna op, daar ik zo'n 'goed' fragment nog niet had aangetroffen in deze baggerproductie. Natuurlijk wordt er (sporadisch) ook nog wat geschoten in deze film; het is per slot van rekening een western. Vestig je hoop hier echter maar niet op, want ook dit behoort tot het slechtste dat het westerngenre heeft voortgebracht. Om maar af te sluiten met een positieve noot, merk ik op dat actrice Elsa Martinelli er beter uitziet dan de echte Belle Starr. Dit gegeven verzacht echter nauwelijks iets.

(translation:) I didn't expect The Belle Starr Story to be a real gem, but I did expect an enjoyable, exploitative movie on 'the female Jesse James'. But the film never lived up to the expectations. In other words, this is a real stinker that is below par in all departments. You wouldn't have me caught whining if only it had been a little entertaining one way or another, but this is not the case by any stretch of the imagination, so it simply is a lacklustre spaghetti western in which hardly anything happens. If you watch this movie, you'll have a hard time to reach the end credits. Especially the cinematography and the acting hurt the eye. But storytelling is probably even worse. In this aspect, it's quite an achievement that the script of this movie without any action, manages to jump from one subject to another. In conversations with an outlaw she loves, the female protagonist tells us about her background. By means of flashbacks we get a very hackneyed portrait of a woman who went 'wrong' because of circumstances. In other words, it's not her fault that she became the Female Terror of the Wild West. Now I'm willing to accept that this is all true, but it makes you wonder why her criminal behaviour gets hardly any attention. Apparently the filmmakers thought it was more fun to bore viewers with romantic fuss. The romance is not filmed in 'Hollywood-style', but therefore not less irritating. Moreover, Belle Star's love interest, like his predecessors, is a very obnoxious guy. The only thing I like about the character, was somebody tearing off his ear-ring - it was exactly what I was hoping for since the first time I saw him. This action is part of a sequence in which this bloke is tortured, in not too gritty fashion. I nearly jumped out of my seat, for I had not yet seen such a 'good' scene in this turkey. Of course there's (sporadically) some shooting in this movie, after all it is a western. I wouldn't put too much hope in those scenes, because they belong to the worst the genre has to offer. But to end in positive fashion, I'd like to mention that actress Elsa Martinelli looks better than the real Belle Starr. But that's hardly a consolation.
