This page is our personal hall of faml'e. A reminder to us all that even though considered a B-genre, Spaghetti Westerns were full of great characters, played by great people. Many have passed away, and while we are young growing up re-watching all these classics, many more will probably leave us. May they be remembered. German actor Fritz Wepper died in Munich, Germany on March 25, 2024. He was 82. He started his acting career in a production of Peter Pan at the age of eleven. He got his first important film role in Tischlein deck dich, a film adaption of the Brothers Grimm fairytale The Wishing Table. Fritz is best known for his role as Inspector Harry Klein in the long-running crime series ‘Derrick’ (1974–1998). Wepper is also remembered for his roles in the films “Cabaret” (1972) and “The Bridge” (1959) and as Mayor Wöller in the TV series ‘Um Himmels Willen’ (2002–2021). Wepper appeared in one Euro-western as Tampico in the 1963 television production of “Ein Sheriff für den Sarg”.
 
Italian director and screenwriter Pasquale Squitieri died today February 18th in Rome. He was 78. He began his film career in 1969 with “lo e Dio”, produced by Vittorio De Sica, and under the pseudonym William Redford which he also used in two spaghetti western films: “Django Defies Sartana” and “Vengeance Trail”. His career ended very early when Squitieri dedicated his life to current issues and reality in Italian society: Contacts between the Mafia and politics, drugs, terrorism, the "white deaths" and immigration. But his fame is mainly due to his historical and political films, some of which have earned him much criticism. This is the case of " Li chiamarono... briganti!", In 1999 he withdrew immediately from the industry under mysterious circumstances.

Veteran producer and screenwriter Bruce Lansbury died in La Quinta, California on February 13, 2017. He was 87. Born William Bruce M. Lansbury on January 12, 1930 in London, England, he was the son of Irish-born stage actress Moyna Macgill and Edgar Lansbury, a politician and timber merchant. His grandfather was George Lansbury, a former Labor Party leader in England and a member of Parliament. His sister was actress Angela Lansbury and he had a twin brother Edgar. Bruce served as VP of creative affairs for Paramount Television starting in the late 1960s, supervising such series as ‘The Brady Bunch’, ‘Happy Days’, ‘The Odd Couple’, ‘Love, American Style’, and ‘Petrocelli’. He joined CBS' ‘The Wild Wild West’ before its second season and assumed control of the futuristic Western in the summer of 1966 when the show's creator, Michael Garrison, died from injuries suffered in a fall in his home. Lansbury went on to produce 69 episodes of Wild Wild West before it was canceled in 1969 amid an outcry over violence on television. Bruce was a screenwriter on six episodes of the 1990-1991 ‘Zorro’ TV series, filmed in Spain and starring Duncan Regehr.

American cinematographer Gerald Hirschfeld died February 13th. He was 95. Born on April 25, 1921, in New York City, Hirschfeld was self-taught in his craft — mostly by watching movies. He filmed such classics as “Young Frankenstein”, “Two-Minute Warning”, “Fail-Safe” and several other films including one Euro-western, 1970’s “Doc” starring Stacy Keach and Faye Dunaway.

French singer, actor and voice dubber Daniel Beretta died on March 23rh. He was 77. Beretta was born on December 24, 1946 in Audincourt, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, France. He started his career as a Chanson Singer-Songwriter, having given several concerts at the Olympia and Bobino concert halls and wrote several songs for the likes of Mireille Mathieu and Nino Ferrer. He also notably adapted and performed songs for the French version of “Jesus Christ Superstar” as well as the stage adaptation of “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg”. Having trained as a musician also allowed him to sing in his animation dubs (such as Lumière's music numbers in “Beauty and the Beast”, again). He dubbed Arnold Schwarzenegger in the French versions of all his films since 1987. Daniel was also the announcer for the French radio RFM from 2000 to 2008. His daughter, Barbara Beretta, is also a professional voice actress. He quietly retired for health reasons in the early 2020s. Daniel Beretta appeared in one Euro-western “In the Dust of the Sun” in 1971 as Hawk Bradford.


Cree cultural icon Tyrone Tootoosis died at his home near Duck Lake, Saskatoon. Tootoosis, who was 58, died early Sunday morning, February 12th of colon cancer. He was at his ranch near Duck Lake, Sask., which he shared with his wife, University of Saskatchewan professor Winona Wheeler. Tootoosis was a key figure in the Indigenous performing arts, but also in Cree linguistics and history. Like his father, Wilfred, Tootoosis spent tens of thousands of hours sitting with elders, recording their stories. Tyrone was born on Poundmaker Reserve, Saskatchewan, Canada in 1959. He was the nephew of Native American film and TV actor Gordon Tootoosis who died in 2011 at the age of 70. Tyrone appeared in one Euro-western the U.S., Canadian, German co-produced television film ‘DreamKeeper’ in the role of Whirlwind Dreamer.

Italian composer, musical director, conductor, pianist Gianfranco died in Rome today February 7th, he was 74. Plenizio was born in Sedegliano Udine, Italy on January 10, 1941. He studied piano with Enrico De Angelis Valentini and conduction under Franco Ferrara. After his debut as a pianist, he focused on conducting; among others, he conducted the London Symphony Orchestra, the Santa Cecilia Orchestra, the Orquesta Nacional de España, the Orchestre de chambre de Genève and the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. He was conductor on the Euro-western film scores for “Boot Hill” (1968), “El Puro” (1969), “They Call Me Trinity” (1970), “Trinity is STILL My Name” (1971), “White Fang to the Rescue” (1974), “Red Coat” “Cipolla Colr” and “Zorro” and “Who’s Afraid of Zorro” all 1975. Active as a film score composer, Plenizio collaborated with notable directors such as Federico Fellini, Billy Wilder, Mario Monicelli, Pietro Germi, Ermanno Olmi. He composed three scores for Euro-westerns: “Garter Colt” (1968), “Who’s Afraid of Zorro” and “Django Strikes Again”. He was also active as an author of essays, mainly focusing on history of music.

These included “The Molly Maguires”, “Beyond the Pale”, “Ash Wednesday” and he also used to make an annual festive appearance in’ All My Children’ as Father Clarence. Malachy appeared in one Euro-western in an uncredited role in 1976’s “Montana Trap” aka “Potato Frits” with Hardy Krüger and Stephen Boyd.


RIP Montserrat Julió. Spanish actress Montserrat Julió died in Madrid, Spain on January 26th. She was 87. Born Montserrat Julió i Nonell in 1929 in Mataró, Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. She lived in exile in Chile during the Spanish Revolution and returned to Spain in 1956 where she began  theatrical and film career. Later she appeared in television and wrote several book including her autobiography Chronicle of an Exile to Xile. Montserrat appeared as Cecily Breidlinger in the rare 1975 Euro-western “The Valley of the Dancing Widows”.

British actor Sir John Hurt who starred in “The Elephant Man” and “Harry Potter died of cancer
Italian theater, film and TV actor Gigio Morra died at his home in Naples, Italy on March 10th. He was 78. Born in Naples on August 26, 1945. He graduated in 1966 from the Academy of Dramatic Art in Naples. He made his debut in theater with Eduardo De Filippo, with whom he worked from 1970 to 1980. As a character actor, he was present in about twenty films including his only Spaghetti western “Arrapaho” in 1984 in the role of Pierpaolo.  
On January 27th. He was 77. Born John Vincent Hurt in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England on January 22, 1940, the star was one of Britain's most treasured actors, at his home in Norfolk after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. Sir John was well known for roles including Quentin Crisp in “The Naked Civil Servant”, the title role in “The Elephant Man” and wand merchant Mr Ollivander in the “Harry Potter” films. His only Euro-western was as John Schofield in 1994’s “Dead Man” starring Johnny Depp.

Jaki Liebezeit, drummer and founding member of Krautrock legends Can, died January 22 of pneumonia. He was 78. Liebezeit recorded with Can for all the band’s studio albums, and performed and recorded throughout his life. While Liebezeit was arguably best known for his work with Can, some of his earliest recordings were as a member of Manfred Schoof’s bands in the late 1960s. He appeared on Brian Eno’s Before and After Science as well as solo records by Neu!’s Michael Rother. He would later collaborate with Depeche Mode and the Eurythmics. He formed drum-centric groups Drums Off Chaos and Club Off Chaos. Liebezeit along with his CAN bandmates can be heard on the Euro-western soundtracks of “Deadlock” (1970) and “Carlos” - 1971.
Italian director and screenwriter Roberto Leoni died in Rome on March 5, 2024. He was 83. Leoni scripted more than seventy films some of which have become real cult movies such as “Santa Sangre” (1989) by Alejandro Jodorowsky and “My Dear Killer” (1972) by Tonino Valerii. He also wrote and directed TV films. Beginning in August 2017 he reviewed new and classic movies on his talk show ‘Roberto Leoni Movie Reviews’. Leoni was co-writer of the 1977 Spaghetti western “California” starring Giuliano Gemma and William Berger.

Italian actor and voice dubber Angelo Nicotra died in Rome on March 8th. He was 75. He was the brother of the director Giancarlo Nicotra. Angelo made his screen debut as a child actor in the 1950s. He was better known for his dubbing and was the official voice of American actor Morgan Freeman after the retirement of Renato Mori. He was also the voice of Mr. Potato in the four “Toy Story” films. Nicotra was the Italian voice of Simón Andreu in 1971’s “Bad Man’s River; Chris Chitell in 1971’s “They Call Him Cemetery”; Pedro Sanchez in 1972’s “My Horse, My Gun, Your Widow; Alberto Dell’Acqua in 1972’s “Panhandle .38”; Antonio Marsina in 1976’s “Keoma” and Walter Lucchini in 1981’s “Buddy Goes West”.

Italian theater, film and TV actor Gigio Morra died at his home in Naples, Italy on March 10th. He was 78. Born in Naples on August 26, 1945. He graduated in 1966 from the Academy of Dramatic Art in Naples. He made his debut in theater with Eduardo De Filippo, with whom he worked from 1970 to 1980. As a character actor, he was present in about twenty films including his only Spaghetti western “Arrapaho” in 1984 in the role of Pierpaolo.
