RIP Mario Novelli. Italian stuntman and actor Mario Novelli (aka Anthony Freeman) has died. He was 76. Born Mario Novelli on Febraury 26, 1940 in Rome, Italy he became an often  seen face in Spaghetti western genre of the 1960s and ‘70s appearing in 10 Euro-westerns such as: “Texas, Adios” (1966), “The Stranger Returns” (1967), “And God Said to Cain” (1969) “Dead Men Ride” (1971) and “California” (1977). His sons Alessandro [1970] and Emilaino [1972]

Many have passed away, and while we are young growing up re-watching all these classics, many more will probably leave us. May they be remembered. Italian soprano Daniela Dessi died August 20th, after a short battle with colon cancer. She was 59. Born on May 14, 1957, in Genoa, Italy, she possessed one of the most beautiful voices on the opera stage today. Dessi appeared as Minnie in the 2005 TV opera broadcast of ‘La fanciulla del West’.

Romanian composer Adrian Enescu died on August 19th in Bucharest, Romania. He was 68. Born in Bucharest on March 31, 1948 he was world renowned composer and musician. He was married to actress Adina Popescu [1947- ] since 1980. He composed scores for three Euro-westerns: The Actress, the Dollars and the Transylvanians (1978), The Prophet, the Gold and the Transylvanians (1978), The Oil, the Baby and the Transylvanians (1981).


  • SANTOS, José Luis - 1953, Madrid, Madrid, Spain - 8/10/2016, Madrid, Madrid, Spain

Spanish theater actor José Luis Santos died of cancer in Madrid, Spain on August 10th. He was 63. Santos was well known and respected as a supporting theater actor who made over 45 film and TV appearances from 1985 to 2014. He made one Euro-western appearance in 1998’s “The Return of the Coyote.”


  • GARRIBA, Fabio - 11/13/1944, Soave, Verona, Veneto, Italy - 8/9/2016, Verona, Veneto, Italy

Italian assistant director, actor and poet Fabio Garriba died in Verona, Veneto, Italy on August 9th. He was 67. Born on November 12, 1944 in Soave, Verona, Veneto, Italy, Fabio, the twin brother of director and actor Mario Garriba appeared in two Euro-westerns “Django’s Cut Rate Corpses” (1971) [as Garriba Fabio] and “Now They Call Him Sacramtento” (1972). He was also an assistant director on 1971’s “The Grand Duel”.


  • UKMAR, Franco - 3/29/1936 - 8/12/2016, Italy

One of the most prolific actors and stuntmen in the Spaghetti western genre died on August 10th. Franco Ukmar along with his brothers; Giovanni, Sergio Bruno, and Clemente were circus acrobats who answered the call for stuntmen in the early 1960s. Word went out when the Sword and Sandal pictures were being filmed in Rome for stuntmen and acrobats. The brothers answered the call and Franco and Bruno stood out. Both became actors and since they athletic they could be used as stuntmen without having to hire added help. Franco appeared in 54 Euro-western credited roles. Among which were “Sabata” and “The Return of Sabata”, “Professionals for a Massacre”, “The Man of the East”, the two ‘Trinity’ films, “Keoma” and a “Man Called Blade”. Although his age was not mentioned he is thought to have been in his 70s.
