This page is our personal hall of fame. A reminder to us all that even though considered a B-genre, Spaghetti Westerns were full of great characters, played by great people. Many have passed away, and while we are young growing up re-watching all these classics, many more will probably leave us. May they be remembered. What follows, is a work-in-progress, a growing list of legends who have passed away...

Uruguayan actor George Hilton died in Rome, Italy on July 28th of an undisclosed illness. He was 85. Jorge Hill Acosta y Lara on July 16, 1934 in Montevideo Uruguay. Hilton grew up in England where began his career working in radio. In 1955 he moved to Argentina, adopting the pseudonym Jorge Hilton. He soon began to appear in several soap operas and film production for Argentina's domestic market. In 1963 he moved to Italy, following the footsteps of other famous South American actors such as the Argentines Jorge Rigaud and Alberto de Mendoza, who were attracted by the thriving Italian film industry of the '60s. Here he Anglicized his name to George Hilton and began a successful film career in Euro-westerns, action, giallo and police films. Hilton appeared in over 20 Euro-westerns such as” “Any Gun Can Play” (1967), “The Ruthless Four” (1968), “A Bullet for Sandoval” (1969), “The Return of Halleluja” (1972). He is fondly remembered as one of the biggest stars of Italian cinema, along with Terence Hill, Franco Nero and Giuliano Gemma. His legacy as a film star also remains intact. Hilton recently was the subject of a documentary on his life produced and directed by Daniel Camargo called “The World Belongs to the Daring” (2019).

Eduardo Gomez Manzano has died in Madrid, Spain. He died one day after his 68th birthday. Gómez began acting late in life. In his early forties, he was accompanying a friend to a shooting. The production team persuaded him to say a few phrases to the camera. Andrés Pajares, a comedian and actor, saw him during the production and asked him whether he acted. Gómez answered that he was not an actor but if he paid him, he would act. Of the experience, Gómez has said, "The next day I went, he paid me and to this day! [...] What has happened to me doesn't happen to many people. I'm very happy." He went on to perform in small parts in Spanish television and cinema, including parts in the Goya Award-winning movies La comunidad and La lengua de las mariposas He later appeared in a sequel of Santiago Segura’s Torrente series, Torrente 3: El Protector. He also had a part in the movie version of the legendary Spanish comic strip Mortadelo y Filemón. He’s best remembered by Euro-western fans as ‘The Hanged Man’ in 2002’s “800 Bullets.”

Italian acrobat, stuntman, actor Roberto Dell’Acqua died in Rome, Italy on September 16, 2019. He was 73 years old. Born into a family of circus people he worked as an acrobat along with his older brothers and later transformed this talent into a career as a stuntman in films and television. He also appeared as a supporting actor in over 60 films. Sometimes billed as Robert Stevenson and Leo Widmark he appeared in over 20 Euro-westerns from “Killer Caliber .32” in 1967 to  “Buck at the Edge of Heaven” in 1991. The Italian film industry put his natural talents as an acrobat to good us as Robert was usually seen as a saloon and barroom brawler, while playing henchmen soldiers and deputies in most of the westerns he appeared.  Some of his better known Euro-westerns included “Boot Hill” (1969), “Have a Nice Funeral My Friend” (1970); “Trinity is STILL My Name” (1971); “Shanghai Joe” (1973); “The Son of Zorro” (1973); “Keoma” (1975) and “Buddy Goes West”.


The screenwriter Giorgio Arlorio (Turin, February 27, 1929), a leading figure in Italian cinema, author with Franco Solinas and Gillo Pontecorvo of Queimada , but also many successful films and works, died July 25, 2019 in his Roman house after a long illness. of quality as Nanny Loy 's family man . He was also assistant director for Pietro Germi, Mario Soldati and Michelangelo Antonioni. Author mostly engaged in films with strong political connotations (besides Queimada, Tepepa, Il mercenario, Ogro), Arlorio also worked on comedy films and collaborated anonymously with Franco and Ciccio. Arlorio was involved as a writer on “The Mercenary” (1968) and “Zorro” (1975).

Born in Hartford, Connecticut on August 2, 1927 he worked with Orson Welles filming Chimes at Midnight in Spain during the Franco years and while living there was the film editor on the Euro-western “Custer of the West” starring Robert Shaw, Robert Ryan and Ty Hardin.


Veteran South African theater, film and TV actor Danny Keogh died in Cape Town, South Africa. He was 71. Danny's theatrical career earned him numerous award nominations. He made his screen debut in 1977 and since then added onto an extensive career spanning over three decades. His most notable screen credits include the Clint Eastwood-directed film “Invictus” (2009) and the Sci-Fi trilogy-marker “Starship Troopers 3: Marauder” (2008). Notable television appearances include ‘The Lost Future’ (2010) (TV), ‘The Sinking of Laconia’ (2011) (TV) and ‘Labyrinth’ (2012) (TV). Keogh appeared in two Euro-westerns: as a bartender in From Dusk Till Dawn 3: The Hangman’s Daughter (1999), and as Calder Jenkins in  2014’s “The Salvation”.

Rutger Hauer, the Dutch actor best known for his role as cyborg Roy Batty in seminal sci-fi film Blade Runner has died at the age of 75. Hauer died at his Neathrlands home on July 19, 2019. He was 75. Born Rutger Oelesen Hauer on January 23, 1944 in Breukelen, Utrecht, The Netherlands. Handsome, energetic and fluent in several languages, Hauer made his first mark in the late ‘60s in the Netherlands as the star of Paul Verhoeven’s medieval TV series “Floris.” He vaulted to the top ranks of Dutch stardom in 1973 opposite Monique van de Ven in Verhoeven’s sexually explosive drama “Turkish Delight,” which became a box-office smash and garnered an Oscar nod as best foreign film. Hauer appeared in the 2018 Euro-western “The Sisters Brothers” in the role of ‘The Commodore’.

Italian director Alessandro Valori died in a Recanati, Italy restaurant of a heart attack on September 9. He was 54. Valori was born in Macerata, Marche, Italy in 1965 and directed the Euro-western short B.B.K. (Baby Bounty Killer) in 1996.  


Art “Poppa Funk” Neville spent a half-century shaping the sound of New Orleans music. The keyboardist and singer was a founding member of the Meters and the Neville Brothers, and was the voice of the enduring Carnival season anthem “Mardi Gras Mambo.” Neville died July 22, 2019 in his New Orleans home after years of declining health, according to sources close to his family. He was 81. Born Arthur Lanon Neville in New Orleans, Lousiana on December 17, 1937 he formed along with hi brothers Aaron, Charles and Ivan the singing group “The Neville Brothers”.  The Neville Brothers were part of the soundtrack for the 1990 Euro-western “Posse” starring Mario Van Peebles.

Italian director, writer, actor Franco Garofalo died in Rome, Italy on August 22, 2019. He was 73 years-old. Sometimes billed as Frank Kramer (not the director by the same name who is Gianfranco Parolini) he was born in Naples, Italy on April 18, 1946. He made his film debut in “Il sesso della Strega” (Sex of the Witch) in 1973. In 1974 appeared in American director Steve Carver’s “The Arena”. Garofalo was also known for his roles in “Hell of the Living Dead” (1980), and “Schizofrenia di un attore” (2002). Franco appeared in only one Euro-western “They Call Him Veritas” (1972) as Misery starring Mark Damon.


The Italian actress Ilaria Occhini a film, television and theater actress, for over half a century died July 21, 2019. She was married to writer Raffaele La Capria. Born in Florence, Italy on March 28, 1934, she made her acting debut at the age of 19 in the film “Terza Liceo” under the pseudonym of Isabella Redi, before graduating from the National Academy of Dramatic Art in Rome. On television she was directed by Anton Giulio Majano, she had established herself at a very young age in the dramas “L'Alfiere” and “Jane Eyre”. She made her theater debuted in 1957 in the “Impresario delle Smirne” by Carlo Goldoni directed by Luchino Visconti. Occhini obtained her major successes on stage, working several times with Luchino Visconti, then joining the Piccolo Teatro of Naples, where she received large critical appreciation by interpreting classical and contemporary authors. She was also a constant presence of RAI television series, and also starred in many films, but rarely in leading roles. She appeared in only one Euro-western as Edith Wickett in 1966’s “The Tramplers” with Joseph Cotton and Gordon Scott.

Over the decades, Jukka Virtanen, 86, who has become known to Finnish television viewers for several television shows  , died on Sunday September 1 2019, after a long battle with cancer. Virtanen had an extraordinary career in Finnish television, films and theater. Born on July 25, 1933 in Jämsänkoski, Finland, Virtanen is remembered for example as a presenter, actor, screenwriter, director and songwriter. Virtanen was also one of the founding members of the New Happy Theater. Many also remember him as the presenter of the legendary Record Board. A good friend of Spede Pasanen he worked with him on several films and appeared as Juoppo in 1970’ “Speedy Gonzales”. Jukka also was a writer on the 1970 TV western film “Häjyt, rennot ja rumat”.

Berlin film producer Artur Brauner has died. As reported by the "Bild" newspaper  citing his family, he died on Sunday July 7, 2019. Brauner would have turned 101 on August 1st. Abraham Brauner was born on August 1, 1918 in the Polish city of Łódź. The son of a bourgeois-Jewish home, he survived the Second World War because he hid in the woods. The largest part of his family, however, fell victim to mass murder. His future wife Maria, daughter of a Jewish theater director in Lviv, survived the persecution by the Nazis with Aryan papers. Brauner was married to her for over 70 years until her death in December 2017. Like no one else, Artur "Atze" Brauner shaped German post-war cinema. His CCC founded in 1946 in Berlin-Spandau is the oldest still active production company in Germany. In the CCC studios stars such as Romy Schneider, Heinz Rühmann, Curd Jürgens, OW Fischer, Peter Alexander and Caterina Valente. Brauner's films include "Dr. Mabuse", "Girl in Uniform" and "The Tiger of Eschnapur".Brauner was best known to Western fans as the producer of the Winnetou film series in the 1960s. His contribution to the western genre will not be forgotten. RIP.  
German actor Bruno Thost died in Vienn, Austria on August 28, 2019. He was 83. After graduation, he began his studies in Stuttgart, as mechanical and aircraft engineer, but he stopped off in favor of studying acting, after he had already worked at the Württemberg State Theater as porter, super, stage manager, chorus in the extra chorus and voice roll. In 1963 he passed his final exams and played his first role as Will Parker 1964 on the open-air stage in Wiesmoor near Cuxhaven. Since then he played many roles Karl May . In Wiesmoor he also had the direction in 1965, in Bad Segeberg he supported the now dedicated director Toni Graschberger in his work and worked with him passages of the textbooks to Winnetou ( 1971 ) and In the Gorges of the Balkans ( 1972 ). From 1970 until his retirement in 2001, he was a member of the permanent ensemble at the Vienna Burgtheater. In Seelbach (Ortenaukreis), where he grew up in part, Bruno Thost and his daughter Katja Thost-Hauser encouraged the open-air games that took place there for the first time in 2004. Both father and daughter took over both direction and roles. In the summer of 2017, Bruno Thost undertook an unusual return to Karl May: in the three performances marking the 30th anniversary of the Karl May stage Gföhl , he once again assumed the role of Santer.

One of the leading actors of the Spaghetti western genre Eduardo Fajardo, died in Mexico on July 4, 2019 at the age of 94. Born in Meis, Pontevedra, Galicia, Spain on August 14, 1924 his family moved within a few days of his life to La Rioja. His childhood would take place in Haro, which he confessed liking very well. While still a teenager, he moved to Santander, where he studied the Baccalaureate and began his acting career in 1942, starting as a voice actor, a career he developed until 1946. With Cifesa he signed a contract as an exclusive actor for several years for his greatest successes. He debuted in the cinema with the film Heroes of 95, by Raúl Alfonso (1947), thus inaugurating one of the most bulky filmographies of Spanish cinema, which reaches over 180 titles. He also developed a career in the theater which he carried on and off throughout his career. In 1953 he moved to Mexico, where he combined his participation in the cinema of that country with television appearances; among them Tehuantepec by Miguel Contreras Torres (1954), Tizoc: Indian love by Ismael Rodríguez Ruelas (1957). On his return to Spain he resumed his film career with a frenetic activity that led him to shoot an average of fifteen titles a year in which the roles of the villain abound in the Spaghetti Westerngenre most notably in Django (1966) ) by Sergio Corbucci. In his final years he moved to Almeria where he instituted their Walk of Fame and worked as a director in the theater working with disabled  children. He worked on 183 films, 75 plays and some 2,000 appearances on television in Spain and Mexico, as well as participating in productions from Italy, Germany, France, Great Britain and the United States.
Film, TV and voice actor died in Goslar, Germany on August 26, 2019  He was 78. Kraus was also been heard in radio plays, audiobooks and computer games and has appeared as a reciter and cabaret artist. He has a well-known television role as neighbor Hermann Paschulke since 1981 in the television series Dandelion. Krauss took over the narrator role from 2000 to 2003 at the Karl May Play at Bad Segeberg. Born in Augsburg, Bavaria, Germany on June 11, 1941, in 2005 Krauss played the role of the host Don Geronimo in the play Winnetou and the Secret of the Felsenburg, in which he also told the story. Since the 2014 season, he had been working as a narrator at the Freilichtbühne in Burgrieden, where he now accompanies the pieces directed by Karl May with his distinctive voice.

Spanish director, writer, actor José Luis Merino died in Madrid, Spain on July 3, 2019. He was 92. Screenwriter and director with more than 30 films to his credit in various capacities, José Luis Merino Boves was born in Madrid, Spain on June 10, 1927. He received the Jimeno Award for the direction of “Aquellos tiempos del cuplé” (1958), where he made his debut with Mateo Cano with whom he would direct “El vagabundo y la estrella”, starring the Canarian tenor Alfredo Kraus. Merino directed and wrote screenplays for nine Euro-westerns: “A Fistful of Songs” (1966); “Kitosch, the Man Who Came from the North” (1966); “Duel in the Eclipse” (1968) director only; “Gatling Gun” (1968) writer only; “Zorro's Latest Adventure” (1969) director only; “Another Dollar for the McGregors” (1970); “Zorro the Invincible” (1971); “Zorro, Rider of Vengeance” (1971) and “7 cabalgan hacia la muerte” (1979) where he also appeared in the role of Zachary Carter.
Italian film actor Carlo Delle Piane died in Rome on August 23, 2019. He was 83. He was born in Rome on February 2, 1936 and made his film debut at the age of twelve in Duilio Coletti's “Heart and Soul”; he starred in the stereotypal role of an arrogant but basically kind-hearted boy for a large number of films until mid-fifties. The turning point of his career was an encounter with Pupi Avati, with whom Delle Piane experienced more significant and varied roles, going from comic surreal performances to melancholic and even dramatic shades. He appeared in more than 100 films winning the Nastro d'Argento for Best Actor for his performance in “Una gita scolastica”. For his role in “Regalo di Natale” (1986) he won the Volpi Cup at the 43rd Venice International Film Festival. Delle Piane appeared in only one Euro-western, 1971’s “Judge Roy Bean” starring Robert Hossein.

Italian director, writer, actor Franco Garofalo died in Rome, Italy on August 22, 2019. He was 73 years-old. Sometimes billed as Frank Kramer (not the director by the same name who is Gianfranco Parolini) he was born in Naples, Italy on April 18, 1946. He made his film debut in “Il sesso della Strega” (Sex of the Witch) in 1973. In 1974 appeared in American director Steve Carver’s “The Arena”. Garofalo was also known for his roles in “Hell of the Living Dead” (1980), and “Schizofrenia di un attore” (2002). Franco appeared in only one Euro-western “They Call Him Veritas” (1972) as Misery starring Mark Damon.

Over the decades, Jukka Virtanen, 86, who has become known to Finnish television viewers for several television shows , died on Sunday September 1 2019, after a long battle with cancer. Virtanen had an extraordinary career in Finnish television, films and theater. Born on July 25, 1933 in Jämsänkoski, Finland, Virtanen is remembered for example as a presenter, actor, screenwriter, director and songwriter. Virtanen was also one of the founding members of the New Happy Theater. Many also remember him as the presenter of the legendary Record Board. A good friend of Spede Pasanen he worked with him on several films and appeared as Juoppo in 1970’ “Speedy Gonzales”. Jukka also was a writer on the 1970 TV western film “Häjyt, rennot ja rumat”.

German actor Bruno Thost died in Vienn, Austria on August 28, 2019. He was 83. After graduation, he began his studies in Stuttgart, as mechanical and aircraft engineer, but he stopped off in favor of studying acting, after he had already worked at the Württemberg State Theater as porter, super, stage manager, chorus in the extra chorus and voice roll. Italian film actor Carlo Delle Piane died in Rome on August 23, 2019. He was 83. He was born in Rome on February 2, 1936 and made his film debut at the age of twelve in Duilio Coletti's “Heart and Soul”; he starred in the stereotypal role of an arrogant but basically kind-hearted boy for a large number of films until mid-fifties. The turning point of his career was an encounter with Pupi Avati, with whom Delle Piane experienced more significant and varied roles, going from comic surreal performances to melancholic and even dramatic shades. He appeared in more than 100 films winning the Nastro d'Argento for Best Actor for his performance in “Una gita scolastica”. For his role in “Regalo di Natale” (1986) he won the Volpi Cup at the 43rd Venice International Film Festival. Delle Piane appeared in only one Euro-western, 1971’s “Judge Roy Bean” starring Robert Hossein.
