Review

This is only a part of the unfinished western “The Gold Digger”, which was named “Horse Opera”. The short and black-and-white film was shot on a hand-held camera with 8mm film, which was transferred from film to VHS tape by the director’s son Petr Bartošík in 1997. The film was restored by the company “Trampské filmové studio Jestřáb (The tramp film studio Jestřáb)” in Suchdol nad Odrou in the southern part of the district of the Nový Jičín city in the Moravian-Silesian region in Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic) in the same year. The exteriors of the original movie from 1964 were shot in the village of Suchdol nad Odrou and natural locations in its vicinity. This is the only western by Jan Bartošík (1940-2016), who also worked on the film as one of the two cameramen and editor. This is the amateur western that was created in independent production conditions and in an improvised way, so we do not find the characteristic elements of an industrially shot film such as a script, screenplay, set and costumes or production. In short, this is a revenge story about a lone rider who avenges the death of a dead gold miner who was shot in a river canyon by a bandit to steal the gold he found. It is a relatively rare film, which is still not well known in a broad context and is closely connected with the regional environment of the village of Suchdol nad Odrou.
