The Film

Richard Harrison stars as Gringo, a returning combatant from the Mexican civil war who arrives home to find his adoptive father murdered and the family gold stolen by three masked men. His search for revenge leads him into conflict with an assortment of local townsfolk including the sheriff and his ex girlfriend, Maria, and ultimately ends with a classic showdown on main street.

Comment

This early spaghetti shows clear indications as to where the fledgling genre was heading and features the first (but very traditional) western music score by Ennio Morricone. The Italian co-production company (Jolly Films) was the same which would produce FoD; with photographer Dallamano, it featured another key figure of the Leone film. Have a close look how the final duel is shot and edited. Otherwise it's mostly a simple film, but possibly the best of the European pre-Fistful westerns. // by Stanton
