Reccomendations To The New Spaghetti Western Fan
From The Spaghetti Western Database

Introduction
New to Spaghetti Westerns? This is the place to start if you'd like to know the best one's to buy. Now. Most new time fans are inspired by The Good, The Bad And The Ugly. I will list that as a great (if not the greatest Spaghetti Western) but I don't want to insult your intelligence. Now, there are hundreds of them around. And my job in this is to select a few which I have enjoyed. And that you may be interested in. That means you can have an opinion on what to watch from me. I suggest reading up on the on The Internet Movie Database before buying, because you may not like the story, or something like that.
So! On with the show.
The First Stage - The Necessities
There are the main Spaghetti Westerns that I would urge anyone to get. These are listed below.

THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY
Probably the best example of a Spaghetti Western that everyone can enjoy. It's a movie that is rated the best western ever by the Internet Movie Database and probably is. It's the big player in the Spaghetti Westerns, and if you have not seen it. But wish to embark on the journey of this genre. START THERE. Features the classical songs composed by Ennio Morricone.

ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST
This is also in my opinion tied with The Good, The Bad And The Ugly. It's a gripping tale starring no other than all american actor Henry Fonda then tough guy Charles Bronson, stage actor Jason Robards and a beautiful Claudia Cardinale. The all star cast does not duant the movie, it takes it up several peggs. That and the great music by the composer Ennio Morricone.

The Second Stage - The After Films
After watching those two films, i am in NO doubt that you will want more. And more is what i will show you. The next three films, like the ones above are by the master Sergio Leone. He is the most famous and critically acclaimed Spaghetti Western director. And no-one tops his films.

FISTFUL OF DOLLARS
Again music from Morricone, and starring the great Clint Eastwood. It is apart of the dollars trilogy that contains The Good, The Bad And The Ugly and For A Few Dollars More. Truly mesmorising, and any fan must watch these.

FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE
The same goes for this. Eastwood takes on his role and it's another breathtaking Leone flick. What's to say that hasn't been said? Just watch it, any Spaghetti Western fan will tell you too. :D

Other Directors
Sergio Corbucci
The films of Sergio Corbucci is a good place to continue. "The Great Silence" is a classic, as are the two revolutionary based films "The Mercenary" and "Compañeros", which are similar to each other in many ways. "Django" is also recommended for its historical significance. |
Sergio Sollima
Sergio Sollima made three classic spaghetti westerns which are conviniently available together with English Subtitles from Koch Media ( Sergio Sollima DVD Box review )
|
Duccio Tessari
![]() ![]() If you have watched already the movies above, you should also take a look at the two Ringo-movies "A Pistol for Ringo" and "The Return of Ringo" by Duccio Tessari starring Giuliano Gemma and Fernando Sancho. They are both available with English soundtrack from Koch Media. |
Others
Another film well worth watching is Keoma, which aside from a grating soundtrack, is otherwise excellent.
Series
Perhaps edging towards silliness, the Sartana series of films is generally entertaining, but may be worth diving into slowly to discover if you enjoy that approach to the spaghetti western before buying all of them!
