The Film

A ten year old boy must watch how his father is killed by a professional gunman, paid by a certain Mr. Barrett. He shoots the gunman in the back with his father’s shotgun and steals his silver saddle. Twenty years later he has become a famous gunman, recognized by most people by his beautiful silver saddle. When he gets an offer to do a professional killing, he refuses (his gun’s not for hire), but he changes his mind when he hears the name of the victim is Barrett. But then the intended victim turns out to be a ten year old boy …

Comment

Often called the last spaghetti western, this film seems two films for the price of one: an adult western with graphic violence (the film director Fulci wanted to do) and a family movie with a rather mellow atmosphere (the film Gemma preferred to make). Although not one of the great spaghetti westerns, this is a nice film and a worthy conclusion of the legendary genre. Geoffrey Lewis steals the show as a God-fearing good-for-nothing who scavanges the dead. - Scherpschutter
