A bloke from Thailand is asked to bring the ashes of a deceased person to the man's relatives in the Far West. He also brings a valuable souvenir with him, and when the local villains get wind of it, they plan to rob the poor Thai. Unfortunately for them, they hadn't reckoned with his martial arts skills. Furthermore the Asian has found a friend in a Chinese restaurant owner, also one of those guys from the Far East who how how to launch a blow and a kick (or two) ...
The movie combines, in truly excruciating fashion, the western and martial arts genre. It's so bad that I had a good time with it. The dubbing is disastrous. Especially the China man has been given a voice that sounds so cheap that I couldn't help laughing. The director and the rest of the crew, including the actors, are so bad that I was on the verge of tears. The action wasn't much better and the costume design likewise. George Eastman (who plays, of all people, a sheriff) looks as if he had been contracted on the premises of the Woodstock festival. I wouldn't call the martial arts techniques on display very artistic, in fact they look as amateurish as the gunplay. On the soundtrack a tune that's supposed to sound oriental is played over and over again.
A handful of east-meets-west movies were made in the first half of the seventies, and The Tiger from the River Kwai is no doubt the cheapest. The people involved seemed to lack all possible feeling for the art of film making. It's clumsiness galore, but oddly enough, this utter shoddiness is the only attraction of the affair.

Een gast uit Thailand moet de as van een dode naar diens familie in het wilde westen brengen. Hij heeft echter ook een zeer waardevol souvenir bij zich. De plaatselijke slechteriken krijgen hiervan lucht en willen de Thai bestelen. Maar ze houden geen rekening met de vechtkunsten van de Aziaat. Deze heeft bovendien al snel een vriend gevonden in de uitbater van een Chinees restaurant; ook al een Aziaat die rake klappen en - trappen kan uitdelen...
Deze film weet, op werkelijk afgrijselijke wijze, de genres western en martial arts te combineren. De prent is wel zo slecht, dat ik me er redelijk mee heb vermaakt. De dubbing is vreselijk. Vooral de Chinees is een stem mee gegeven die dermate afgezaagd is, dat ik er enkel om kon lachen. De regisseur en de rest van de crew, maar ook de acteurs zijn om te huilen zo slecht. Dit geldt ook voor de actie die totaal niet weet te overtuigen. Ook de kostumering laat nogal te wensen over. Met name George Eastman, die nota bene een sheriff speelt, lijkt te zijn weggeplukt van Woodstock. Het vechtgedeelte mag de naam martial arts niet dragen en is al even slecht als het geschiet. Ondertussen wordt er continu een Oosters bedoeld deuntje uitentreuren herhaald.
Er zijn meer kung fu spaghetti westerns gemaakt, maar The Tiger from the River Kwai is waarschijnlijk de goedkoopste. Bovendien hebben de makers van het medium film geen kaas gegeten. Paradoxaal genoeg is door de vreselijke onkunde, op alle fronten, de film alsnog enigszins de moeite waard.
