I hadn't read a word about this little-known spaghetti western before watching it, so looking at the date of release and the title, I figured I was going to watch a poor man's comedy western in the mould of the Trinity movies with Hill & Spencer. But this is by no means a comedy, even though there's a lot to laugh about.

Being a fan of the infamous Demofilo Fidani, I was attracted by the deceptive international title of the movie, They Called him Trinity. Oddly enough, Fidani wasn't involved at all in the making of this movie and apparently it was Ferninando Merighi who sat in the directional chair.

The pic is as incoherent as you might have guessed and screenwriter Luigi Batzella - another dubious cult figure - makes the worst of a premise that wasn't good to begin with. Most actors are familiar faces from Fidani's movies and the whole thing is shot in the Cave Studios, a ramshackle western town not far from Rome, built by actor Gordon Mitchell himself.

What They called him Trinity also has in common with Fidani, is the man's preference for weird and peculiar characters. In this movie the villain is a laughable guy dressed in a black Ku Klux Klan costume, and we also get a bar owner who's accompanied by a little monkey and dirty pistolero who's constantly blowing his nose, besmearing bystanders with the green and sticky substance.

To fill the time there's some horse riding at a jogtrot and a lot of fistfights and shootouts, all inadequately staged. The result is ultra cheap spaghetti western that seems to make no sense at all. But for all that, I like it. Lol.
